The How Tos of Adventure

When I think of adventures, my mind often skips to the terrifying thoughts of packing skis or jumping out of airplanes. Honestly, those are amazing ideas for adventures but not for me. Over time, I think the idea of “adventure” has taken on a sort of nobility that requires lots of skill, athleticism and money. But the art and science of adventure is much more simple (and much more affordable).

In reality, adventures are “an exciting experience or undertaking that is typically bold, sometimes risky; an exciting or very unusual experience” In the world of My Gnome on the Roam, exciting and unusual experiences are what we do best, and the risks they may include have more to do with creativity, exploration and trying things you may be unfamiliar with. All of the uniqueness opens the mind and heart of each adventurer to beginner’s mind.

Have you ever felt the pure satisfaction of being 'in the zone'? At The Adventure Society, we specialize in creating experiences that immerse you in the magical flow state. This is where challenge meets skill, and time seems to stand still as you fully engage with the adventure at hand.

There are 4 steps that every adventurer can take to master their experiences and make it a habit which can enrich their lives.

1. Schedule adventures- life is busy. Work, practices, cooking, homework, take a large portion of our days. Scheduling adventures serves a dual purpose: first ( and I can’t emphasize this enough), it gives us something to look forward to. Any difficult task/day/week is made easier when there is something to get excited about. Second, putting adventures on the schedule makes them 80% more likely to happen. Travel and vacations may need to be scheduled weeks or months in advance- the perk of that is plenty of time to plan and build excitement. If you plan your week on a certain day, you can pencil adventures into your calendar along with your to do list, grocery list. With our app, we give you daily ideas so that you have an endless supply of suggestions for adventures you can fit into almost any day. (And never underestimate the power of an off-the-cuff adventure as a bandaid to a particularly difficult day).

2. Choose your Adventure. As you plan for adventures, there are a number of ways to choose what you will do. You can let each family member choose an idea each day/week. You can make a bucket list of ideas and choose items from the list. You can celebrate special events either adventures dedicated to or selected by the celebrity of the day.

3. Have your Adventure- this is the best (and the easiest) part. Be PRESENT as you enjoy your adventure. Do the thing. Be excited. Be nervous. Be a beginner. Try. Make a mess. Be open to failure. Just don’t get on your phone, text your time away or otherwise separate yourself from the experience. If you’d love a real scientific adventure, take the time to sit in a restaurant or go to a park and look at how many people spend their time on their phones rather than talking with and participating in the adventure at hand.

4. Talk about/write about your adventure. This step is the one that separates the new kids from the masters. The true power of adventure doesn’t stop when the adventure is over. In fact, when you talk about and write about adventures once you complete them, you get to reflect on them. You get to talk about your favorite parts, the scary parts, what you would do differently if you were to do it again. Our app includes an in-app journal where you can write or even record voices so you can journal while the adventures are fresh on your mind. And our Adventure Kit includes an adventure journal where you can write and share pictures and souvenirs of adventures so they go from digital downloads to real life memories you can look at again and again over the years.

We offer everything you need to build a lifetime of adventures. (For less than a cup of coffee/month.)
