What if the best things in life are truly free?

I’m sure you know the song…”the best things in life are free…but you can save it for the birds and bees…I want money.” Money is a requirement on some level. We need it to exchange for food and medicine and the luxury of a roof over our heads, vacations…the list goes on and on. But divorce, health challenges and various other life lessons have invited me to really think about the saying. What is really necessary? What is really important?

When I was a kid I loved my Barbies. I would play with them for hours. The idea of dressing them up sounded so fun. Until I lost a shoe. Or couldn’t find a purse. And how was I supposed to organize all her stuff? So I usually just kept her in her wedding dress or her bathing suit and called it a day.

I know there are many people who specialize in organizing things. I am not one of those people. I love order. And beautiful things. But I love peace more. And with more stuff comes more to organize and clean and put away and take care of. I prefer to spend my time (and my money) on experiences. And memories.

Rainbows
Full moons
Baby’s laughter.
Old people’s laughter.
The sparkle in someone’s eye
A wink
A smile
Holding hands
A hug you don’t want to let go
A cold drink after a hot day
A hot drink after a cold day
A lazy afternoon with nowhere to be
A deep breath at the end of a long day
None of these things cost a dime.

The more I watch, the more I am convinced that more money means more choices. And more choices can mean more confusion. Money is a wonderful tool. But like most tools, you should read the instructions before you get started. And probably again from time to time to make sure you’re still doing it right. Life is better when we have a compass to guide us. And for me, my true north is joy, gratitude and peace.

The beautiful thing about peace is that it is totally free in the moment. And it’s as close as your next breath.
